Jamie Carragher unconvinced by ‘return’ of Yaya Toure

Manchester City manager Manuel Pellegrini hailed an “unbelievable” performance by David Silva in their 3-0 romp against West Bromwich Albion in their Premier League opener on Monday and said he would look to strengthen his squad further.

That leaves Manchester City as the only top 6 team remaining with a chance of impressing on opening weekend.

Stats released by Opta-powered fantasy football game www.oulala.com show that the difference between the Toure of 2013-14 and the one of last season were miles apart, contrary to the Ivorian’s claims.

“I think last season people are talking all the time”, he said. Last season was not the best season for us, but second in the table I think is not bad at all.

Sterling, replaced by Samir Nasri in the 74th minute, should have marked his debut with a goal but was thwarted by Boaz Myhill when put clean through by Fernandinho.

“So I think that he was not focused on what he had to do last year”. There’s been a lot of criticism but it wasn’t a bad season.

Pellegrini feels Toure had a season to forget last year after his agent, Dimitri Seluk, announced he was “90 per cent certain” that his client would leave Manchester during the transfer window.

City’s preparations for the new campaign have not gone smoothly, with Manuel Pellegrini’s side conceding four goals against Stuttgart and Real Madrid. Gael Clichy and Fabian Delph are out for the match and West Brom will have Joleon Lescott in doubt with an injury and the team will be hoping for a positive start to the season.

“It will be a big game very early in the season and I’m sure it will matter”, Kompany said.

“We came here today knowing we had a point to prove”, Kompany said. We had that great chance, if Saido scores, makes it 2-1, then we’re back in the game. It went against the principles I have always worked to and it has given me a rude awakening.

“But I don’t care what people are saying about me”.

I enjoy when technical players play in a technical way.

If that goal was scruffy, Toure’s follow up was simply sublime; an emphatic finish after West Brom were ruthlessly cut apart in the build up.
