“Straight Outta Compton” tops North America box office for 2nd weekend

While it was expected before the weekend that Universal Pictures’ N.W.A. biopic Straight Outta Compton, directed by F. Gary Gray, would win the box office for a second weekend in a row, few knew that it would make twice as much as the highest grossing new movie of the weekend.

With an estimated budget of $29 million (€25.4 million), it’s slowly nearing the $100 million (€87.8 million) threshold at the box office, even though it’s still running in limited release in the US.

Minions was down one spot in its seventh weekend, stopping at #9 with $3.7 million.

Sinister 2, a Blumhouse production released by Focus’ genre label Gramercy Pictures, did well enough to place # 3 with a $10.6-M take.

That means Warner Bros.’ Man From U.N.C.L.E., which opened soft last weekend, will take the No. 5 spot in its second outing, if it stays on track to earn in the $7 million range for the weekend. It’s set to cross the $100 million mark on Saturday, its ninth day in theaters, and appears to have plenty of gas still in the tank.

“American Ultra”, distributed by Lions Gate Entertainment Corp., stars Jesse Eisenberg as a government agent turned stoner who is marked for extermination but proves too tough a target.

Apple, which acquired Dr Dre’s headphone and music streaming company, Beats Electronics, a year ago for US$3 billion (S$4.2 billion) and made him an executive, said it believed in the rapper’s sincerity. The horror film was expected to finish second with $16 million, MKM Partners analyst Eric Handler said last week.

Former Twilight star Stewart “has so many followers however they don’t present up for films”, Bock says. The fifth film in the spy series has earned $157.8 million stateside. (L), who portrays Ice Cube, pose with producer Ice Cube at the premiere of “Straight Outta Compton” in Los Angeles, California August 10, 2015.

All three films carried R-ratings and catered to adult crowds, something that may have depressed their results.

The weekend’s final release American Ultra, opened to a measly $5.5 million, falling short of the top five.
