IndyCar driver Wilson in coma

“Justin Wilson sustained a severe head injury during today’s event at Pocono Raceway”. “Wilson was transported by helicopter to Lehigh Valley Health Network Cedarcrest Hospital in Allentown, Pa., with an undisclosed head injury”.

Ryan Hunter-Reay scoring his second win of the season was the least surprising aspect of the ABC Supply 500 from Pocono Raceway, but the Andretti Autosport-Honda ace’s celebrations were muted as he, along with the whole IndyCar paddock, awaited medical updates on his part-time teammate Justin Wilson. Andretti Autosport signed the Englishman to drive the Grand Prix of Indianapolis and the Indy 500 in May and later announced that Wilson would drive the No. 25 vehicle for the final five races of the 2015 season. Andretti started in the 22th position and worked his way up through the field before the accident. The Colombian driver eventually dropped back upon pitting, allowing Ryan Hunter-Reay to move into the lead for the first time on Sunday.

Karam also is tight with fellow IndyCar driver Marco Andretti and the pair go for runs and make frivolous bets over race results.

“We were still in a good spot”, Rahal said.

Writing on twitter he said: “Praying for my bro right now”. He says I turned in on him but there’s not any space. All I know is he was unconscious, he wasn’t responding and he was airlifted. “I just tried to go down [on] the apron and brake, but it was too late”.

“You’ve got to find the right balance between (turns) 1 and 3”.

“Unfortunately, just driving against a guy there who isn’t using his head”, Rahal said of Vautier.

There was no outrage from drivers about the level of safety during the race, at least not in terms of the much-maligned aerodynamic body kits in their first season of use. “We’re wishing him the best”.

IndyCar made its return to the Tricky Triangle in July 2013 after a 24-year hiatus and the 28-year-old driver started off the weekend with a bang by shattering the old track qualifying record to sit on the pole for the inaugural Pocono IndyCar 400. You can see in this slow-motion replay how high the debris shoots into the air after it hits Wilson and how his auto suddenly veers to the left after the hit.

Japan’s Takuma Sato added: “I heard Justin had a big accident and I hope he is OK”. That Hunter-Reay’s 16th career win tied him for 29th on the all-time list with Dan Wheldon was just another morbid irony.

Karam, known as SK$ (SK Money), has infused some needed personality into the IndyCar Series.
