SBP: No need to naturalize Jordan Clarkson

Filipino-American Jordan Clarkson of the Los Angeles Lakers during his first visit in Manila in May. But aside from that, it looks like he has other itineraries as well.

No less than Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) Executive Director Sonny Barrios confirmed that Clarkson is is a Philippine passport holder.

SBP added Clarkson would be invited to observe the Gilas practices in the Philippines and in Taipei while the team prepares for the Jones Cup.

FIBA rules also indicate that only one naturalized player may be part of any national team in all FIBA sanctioned competitions, a slot now occupied by former Brooklyn Nets center Andray Blatche. If the requirements are not fulfilled before the age of 16, then the only way the said player may represent the country is as a naturalized player.

The SBP chief concluded by saying that Clarkson won’t be a naturalized player, but will be classified as a “natural born” player.

“The Pinoy fans have been very supportive of me all year long, and I can’t wait to thank them in person”, Clarkson said on the eve of his first visit to the country three months ago.

Naturalization is normally reserved for a big man and Clarkson is a guard.

He is expected to also be involved in basketball clinics with the youth while in Manila.

Filipino-American Los Angeles Lakers guard Jordan Clarkson will be back once again in Manila on Monday, August 24, and has been invited to “observe” Gilas Pilipinas practice during his stay, according to a statement.

The only good thing that came out of Clarkson’s interest is that when the time comes that Gilas Pilipinas would need a guard, the current Laker guard is readily available (assuming it does not conflict with his National Basketball Association schedule).
