APNewsBreak: New Mexico official plans school district probe

An Albuquerque Public Schools deputy superintendent who resigned two months into his job reportedly is awaiting trial in Colorado on child sexual assault charges.

But the Albuquerque Journal reports that Martinez resigned after school officials became aware that he hadn’t completed a background check. “That’s not what I consider transparent”, APS Board Member Peggy Mueller-Aragon, said.

A district spokesman did not immediately return an email from The Associated Press.

The messages showed Valentino was trying to text state Secretary of Education Hanna Skandera but accidentally texted Moya. “They have a right to know what’s going on”, Muller said.

“I was surprised to learn of these charges and certainly would never have offered Mr. Martinez employment with the district if I had known”, said APS Superintendent Dr. Luis Valentino.

Shortly after, emails leaked to the media revealed Moya and Martinez battling for authority over a request for proposal.

The school board met behind closed doors for five hours Sunday and president Don Duran then read a statement apologizing for the controversy. An audience crowded the meeting, and some demanded that Valentino step down.

The board is scheduled to meet Thursday.

Hundreds of Albuquerque Public Schools parents are signing a petition to have Superintendent Luis Valentino.
