Baker Mayfield to be named Oklahoma starting quarterback

Knight was coming off a spectacular performance in a Sugar Bowl win over Alabama, Blake Bell was still a quarterback and Kendal Thompson had not yet transferred to Utah.

Mayfield will reportedly play ahead of incumbent starter Trevor Knight and sophomore Cody Thomas when OU opens its season vs. Akron on September 5.

The 6-1, 209-pound Mayfield was the Big 12 offensive freshman of the year with the Red Raiders in 2013 when he passed for 2,315 yards with 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions. Oklahoma’s new offensive coordinator tried to recruit the former Lake Travis, TX standout to East Carolina when he announced that he was transferring away from Lubbock. It is a similar system to what he operated at Tech and also in high school.

But Mayfield was determined to join the Sooners, his favorite team throughout his youth.

Despite growing up in the Austin area, Mayfield grew up an OU fan and frequently made trips to Norman to watch the team early in the Bob Stoops era.

Knight still might have the chance for playing time. Being the most experienced of the quarterbacks in the type of offense that Lincoln Riley is installing at Oklahoma gave Mayfield a leg up on the competition.
