Sushma Swaraj arrives in Cairo for two nation tour

The foreign minister will first go to Egyptian capital Cairo where she will meet President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi and hold talks with her counterpart Sameh Hassan Shoukry, sources said.

Addressing a reception organised in her honour by the Indian Community in Cairo, External Affairs Minister, Sushma Swaraj said she was delighted that the Indian community in Egypt has set a very high benchmark and contributed substantially to the development of close ties between India and Egypt.

“The minister’s visit to Cairo will provide an opportunity to review the entire gamut of our bilateral and multilateral relations”, the external affairs ministry said.

“[The] welfare of our citizens outside India, particularly in this region is a top priority of our government”, Swaraj said.

Sushma Swaraj, who is on a two-day visit to Egypt, also met with Nabil El Araby, secretary general of the Arab League.

Egypt has traditionally been one of India’s most important trading partners in the African continent.

There has been diversification in the export basket of Egyptian products to India.

Appealing the diaspora community to be part of the “India growth story” she said, “We are committed to good governance, transparency, inclusive and sustainable growth and we as the government is ushering into an era of rapid eco development”.

India’s imports from Egypt were worth $1.74 billion during 2014-15.

In an address to a select gathering of the Indian community in Egypt on Sunday evening, Swaraj drew attention to India’s strong economic rebound after the National Democratic Alliance, a centre-right coalition led by the BJP, came to power.

“At the same time, there are ongoing projects that Indian started implementing in Egypt. At the moment we are working on a solar Energy projects. We will support each other at the United Nations as well”, said Mr. Wadhwa.
