Straight Outta Comptonquickly surged to a $60.2 million debut, well over the .1 million that Universal previously stated.

Superheroes, dinosaurs, and space adventures may rule the summer box office, but the huge success of hip-hop biopic Straight Outta Compton this weekend proves that there is still demand for more traditional, adult-orientated fare at this time of year.

Straight Outta Compton follows the rise and fall of NWA and the lives of the rappers who are credited for bringing gangsta rap to the forefront.

Coming in at a distant second was Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation” with $17 million.

Dre produced film stars O’Shea Jackson, Jr., Corey Hawkins, Jason Mitchell, Aldis Hodge, Neil Brown Jr., and Paul Giamatti.

“I was hoping for a little higher number, quite frankly”, said Jeff Goldstein, executive vice president of domestic distribution for Warner Bros.

For example, 72 percent of opening weekend audience for “Pitch flawless 2” was female and that film shattered expectations with a $69.2 million release. The troubled superhero movie has earned just over $41 million domestically and $102 million worldwide through two weeks in theaters, making it highly unlikely that the studio will push forward with plans for a sequel.

The box office uptick did not carry over to Guy Ritchie’s The Man from U.N.C.L.E.

Universal has done very well so far this year, with its movies taken together breaking all previous records, grossing $5.5 billion already, globally. The period spy thriller will have an uphill battle to make up its $80 million production budget. Its total earnings now stand at US$157.5 million.
