They said that the road in the area is used by government officials and security convoys.

Kabir Amiri, a spokesman for Kabul’s hospitals, said 11 people, including a foreigner, had been killed and 66 wounded, but he did not include at least two of the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation contractors. He did not disclose their nationalities or jobs. “The United States remains committed to assisting our Afghan partners in their efforts to ensure a peaceful future for Afghanistan”. Pakistan said there had been progress in the first ever talks between the representatives of the Afghan government and the militants in Murree on July 7.

The vast majority of casualties, however, were Afghan civilians. Two Afghan ladies close by additionally have been killed.

It was not immediately clear whether the three contractors were among the 10 killed.

The Taliban denied responsibility for the blast, which struck outside a civilian hospital in Kabul following a wave of fatal bombings earlier this month that rattled the city.

His absence has plunged the insurgency into a power struggle. In addition, Jalaluddin Haqqani, the leader of the hard-line Haqqani Network faction of the Taliban, recently has been reported to have died past year. “We are investigating who carried out the attack”, he quoted the group as saying.

The cause of the blast is not yet known, although in recent months Kabul has been targeted by the Taliban. Some analysts say the insurgents are trying to show they remain potent.
