As Daigle attempted to flee the scene, several passing motorists successfully detained the shooter while others began to render aid to Vincent, he said.

A Louisiana State Trooper who was shot Sunday afternoon during a traffic stop near Lake Charles has died, and now the suspect may also be connected to a homicide that happened before the trooper was shot and killed.

Police video showed Vincent, a 13-year state police veteran in southwest Louisiana and member of a law enforcement family, very professionally trying to talk a man out of the vehicle stuck sideways in a ditch, Edmonson said Sunday.

Vincent then told the driver that help was on the way to get the truck out of the ditch, Edmonson said.

He did not identify the man but said Kevin Daigle, a suspect in the police shooting, was his roommate.

He says Daigle was booked with first-degree murder of a police officer and faces other charges.

At a news conference broadcast live by KPLC-TV, Edmonson said, “Nobody wore this badge more proudly than Steven Vincent“. “You’re going to die soon”.

He says the truck that 54-year-old Kevin Daigle ran into a ditch, triggering the confrontation with the trooper, belonged to the Moss Bluff victim. James Anderson, State Police spokesperson for southwest Louisiana, told CBS News. Edmondson said that in video of the encounter, he could hear Vincent offering assistance to Daigle.

The weapon used in the shooting is still under investigation, he said.

Daigle is white and so was Vincent, he said.

Vincent, 43, is survived by his wife and 9-year-old son. One of his brothers is the police chief in Iowa, Louisiana.

Anderson described Vincent as an optimistic, positive person with a sharp mind and a love for the New Orleans Saints football team. “You’re lucky – you’re going to die soon.’ That’s the words that came out of his mouth”, Col. Mike Edmonson Edmonson told reporters.
