Academy Award victor Jennifer Lawrence bags the title of highest-paid actress

When news of her absurdly lucrative deal for Passengers broke earlier this year (which blows away her co-star Chris Pratt’s salary), it was clear that Jennifer Lawrence was playing in a different league.

Last year’s No. 1 actress, Sandra Bullock, made only $8 million after bringing in $51 million the year before, according to Reuters.

We all know that movie stars get paid hell of a lot to do their thing on screen, and that’s been proven in the latest list of the world’s highest paid actresses of 2015. Lawrence, along with other female leads from American Hustle, earned less in comparison to their male co-stars. As well, Lawrence’s earnings ranked $16.5 million more than Scarlett Johansson, whose $35.5 million earnings landed her at the list’s No. 2 spot. The actress, who makes around $10 million per film, had two huge blockbuster hits in the past year. Stateside, Fan is best known for playing Blink in X-Men: Days of Future Past, but movies such as The White-Haired Witch of Lunar Kingdom and a host of endorsements in her home country helped land her on the list.

Melissa McCarthy laid hands on her largest ever annual paycheck after the hefty success of 2015’s Spy and 2014’s Tammy which grossed a combined $335 million worldwide. The funnywoman is also seriously involved in the fashion world, as her all-size Seven7 clothing line provides her with yet another revenue stream.

Chinese actress Bingbing Fan, “Friends” alum Jennifer Aniston, Oscar winners Julia Roberts, Angelina Jolie, Reese Witherspoon and Anne Hathaway, and “Twilight” alum Kristen Stewart rounded out the top 10. Few weeks ago, Robert Downey Jr. was named the highest paid actor for the third year in a row, earning 80 million, which is $28 million more than Lawrence’s.

The Forbes ranking shows that actresses still earn less than actors.

Forbes list of highest paid actors included 21 men who made more than $20 million. Amy Pascal, Sony’s former co-chair, claimed in 2013 that the top female stars are getting paid the same as their counterparts.
