Texas A&M names Kyle Allen as starting quarterback

Allen’s first start came against Louisiana Monroe where he threw for 106 yards and a touchdown in a 21-16 win.

Allen played in eight games as a true freshman after initial starter Kenny Hill flamed out, got into some disciplinary issues and ultimately transferred to TCU.

Texas A&M HC Kevin Sumlin officially named sophomore Kyle Allen the school’s starting QB.

I presumed Allen would be the starter all along, but as Gabe Bock of TexAgs.com, this competition was as close as you’ll see outside of Ohio State and is curious how Murray fits in the plans this year.

Coaches had begun comparing Murray, one of the top quarterback prospects in the country, to former Aggie star Johnny Manziel, who won the 2012 Heisman.

“The backup will play”, Sumlin said.

Allen was highly touted going into college after strong showings at the Elite 11 camp and the Under Armour All-American games. When Allen committed to Texas A&M, he was considered the No. 1 pro-style quarterback in his class, per 247Sports.

He has some experience: It’s not a lot, but Allen has five starts under his belt and there’s no substitute for experience, particularly in a league like the SEC. If Allen doesn’t perform as expected, expect Sumlin to experiment with his young dual threat sooner rather than later.
