Media reports suggest that the girl was followed to a toilet where she was allegedly raped in a cubicle.
The rape incident happened in a popular restaurant located in Greenside, Johannesburg.
“Just because they have a famous surname, they think they can get away with crime”, the spokesman said. “It turns out that he had been sent by Winnie”, the man said. Mashadi Selepe. He appeared briefly in court Monday when he was charged with rape. Madikizela-Mandela, still a politically powerful woman in South Africa, promised to ask the provincial police commissioner to handle the case and said her family would also hold a press conference, the spokesman said.
She further insisted that fair treatment would be given, despite the accused being a Mandela.
The girl’s family was angry with the way they were treated by the police and Mandela family, according to the family spokesperson.
Nelson Mandela was revered in South Africa and around the world for his efforts to promote racial reconciliation and peace, but members of his family have frequently courted controversy. He will remain in custody until Friday, August 21.
Dwomoh said he is willing to cooperate with the investigation, but has not been interviewed by police.
Mandla, the oldest of Mandela’s grandsons, was convicted early this year for assaulting a Mthatha teacher two years ago.
