Final arrangements made for former Congressman Louis Stokes
“I was honored to serve alongside Louis when I first joined the Appropriations Committee”. It was a position he wouldn’t relinquish for the next three decades but also one he would never take for granted, using his seniority to earn top congressional committee assignments which benefited Cleveland.

The White House issued a statement from President Obama noting how Mr. Stokes overcame hardships while growing up in Cleveland, and praising his belief that everyone should have a chance to succeed.
South Sudan President Salva Kiir has assured U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry that he would sign a peace deal with his rival within days, the State Department said Wednesday, as fighting resumed in parts of the country.
“He’ll be remembered in the communities he strengthened, the veterans he served, and the many lives he touched”, Brown said.
Later, he served on the Iran-Contra investigative committee, where his interrogation of Lt. Col. Oliver North drew attention.
“Lou Stokes always did the right thing and spent his life fighting for Ohioans”.
But Stokes was by no means the only member to get ensnared in that situation, and it did not seriously put his seat at risk.
His death, confirmed by family members, comes a month after his media representative revealed that he was recently diagnosed with lung and brain cancer.
While Stokes’ public demeanor was patient and analytical, colleagues also knew him as tough, principled, and skillful. “Connie and I send our thoughts and prayers to his family”. “He was a giant of a man who embodied a quiet dignity that still inspires me today to do more for those who don’t have a voice”, said Ryan. But Lou Stokes was there as a shining beacon of integrity, of excellence and most important of all for us, of justice. In a statement, CBC Chairman G.K. Butterfield called Stokes the “embodiment of a public servant”.

Following the viewing, there will be a public appreciation program for Stokes, slated to begin about 5:45 p.m. Members of the Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity will pay a special tribute to Stokes.
