LEADING OFF: Giants host surging Cubs; Strasburg streaking

Schwarber struck out in his first major-league at-bat as a pinch hitter after Miguel Montero was ejected late in Cleveland?s 6-0 win over the Cubs on June 16, but torched the Indians over the next two days as Chicago split a pair of games at Progressive Field. He kept the ball on the ground all day and the Cubs defense turned four double plays behind him.

Cubs right-handed reliever Hector Rondon (5-3) worked one-third of an inning for the victory.

Chicago Cubs’ Kris Bryant celebrates his walk off home run during the ninth inning of a baseball game against the Cleveland Indians on Monday, August 24, 2015, in Chicago. Kluber won the 2014 Cy Young Award with the Indians while Lester, a 16-game victor with two teams past year, was an offseason signing by the Cubs.

Both starters rebounded from shaky previous outings after being on rolls. (Thankfully, the neighborhood play doesn’t apply to home runs.) Kluber then came back to strike out Ross for his fifth of the afternoon and had faced the minimum through three innings.

Cubs left-handed starter Jon Lester was one out away from a 1-0 shutout win but gave up a run-scoring single to Indians first baseman Carlos Santana in the top of the ninth.

Ross connected on a pitch that was originally called as a home run down the left-field line, but the umpire crew got together to review the play, resulting it in being overturned. Cleveland (58-66) have dropped two of its last three.

Athletics 11, Mariners 5: Danny Valencia homered and Stephen Vogt doubled twice in Oakland’s seven-run fifth inning, and the Athletics climbed out of a big hole against Hisashi Iwakuma for a victory over Seattle. His sixth-inning double to the right-center field gap drove in two runs and extended Boston’s lead to 5-1. He became the first Red Sox pitcher since Clay Buchholz in 2013 to win five straight starts.

3B Kris Bryant went 3-for-4 with two home runs and three RBIs and set a career high with four runs scored.

Pirates 5, Marlins 2 • J.A. Happ pitched six scoreless innings, extending a streak of strong starts for visiting Pittsburgh in a win over Miami.

Medlen, who returned last month after his second Tommy John surgery, made seven appearances out of the Kansas City bullpen before replacing Jeremy Guthrie in the starting rotation. Indians right-hander McAllister (3-4) pitched 2/3 inning and took the loss.

Perez (0-1) entered in the ninth and gave New York fans a reminder of his wild five seasons with the Mets.

The Cubs have won seven of their last 10 games and continue to knock on the door of a playoff berth in the National League.
