He was flown to hospital, where he is now in a stable condition.

The Department of Primary Industries together with the CSIRO will try to catch and attach monitors to the large sharks lurking off the far north coast.

Other attacks in the northern region include surfer Craig Ison being attacked at Evans Head in July, Matthew Lee attacked at Ballina and Tadashi Nakahara, 41, killed at Ballina’s Shelley Beach in February.

Mr Carr was attacked by a suspected 3m bull shark while body boarding with a mate.

The Ballina Mayor says great hopes are pinned on this week’s efforts to tag great white sharks.

Sharks are common off Australia’s beaches, but fatal attacks are rare.

David Wright said the $1,000 tags will allow authorities to monitor the sharks for up to 10 years. But he acknowledged how terrifying it had been for some of the surfers and fishermen.

The local man reportedly saw the shark coming before it bit him on the left thigh. “It’s totally unprecedented.” Mr Carr has thanked those who rescued him.

“You can virtually see them in the breakers”. “I firstly would like to thank those who were on the beach at the time of this incident and were instrumental in retrieving me from the shoreline”, he said in a statement reported by the Seven Network.
