White Sox ninth. Machi pitching.
Rusney Castillo hit a three-run homer off Jeff Samardzija within the second inning to offer the Pink Sox a Three-1 lead over the White Sox on Monday night time at U.S. Mobile Subject. Alexei Ramirez led off the fifth with a double – he was originally called out at second, but a replay showed that Ramirez pulled off one of his clever slides, this time stuttering his foot and redirecting it to the inside of the base, when Brock Holt’s tag anticipated an outer-half arrival.
The Red Sox likely will finish the 2015 season in last place in the AL East for the third time in four years. But when Castillo, hampered by a series of minor injuries, languished in Triple-A Pawtucket, then did little to impress anyone during a month-long call-up earlier this season, there were people casting Castillo in the bin reserved for Cherington mistakes, a very expensive one at that. Coming into tonight’s game, the Cuban outfielder was batting.
A prime stretch of games to make up ground continues Tuesday night in Chicago with the White Sox trying to even the three-game series with the Red Sox. Finally, though, Carlos Sanchez hit a fly ball to left, which defensive replacement Jackie Bradley Jr. was able to collect to end the inning, and the game. Hanigan singled to right.
After Abreu homered in the first, the Red Sox responded with a two-out rally.
After retiring the first two batters of the second inning, Samardzija hit Ramirez on the arm before yielding a Holt single to right field.
In August, Samardzija has a 9.00 ERA as he has allowed 39 hits and 28 earned runs in 28 innings with 10 walks and 23 strikeouts.
With Junichi Tazawa unavailable after throwing 30 pitches on Sunday, Jean Machi came on in the ninth inning.
After he put the first two runners on in the third, courtesy of a single and another hit batsmen, Samardzija seemed to turn a corner.
Now with nine outs to score four runs, the Red Sox made good use of their first three.
Although another outburst seemed unlikely with Seattle ace Felix Hernandez taking the hill, Boston shattered the previous day’s highs with its most runs since 2003 and most hits (26) since ’05 in a 22-10 victory.
“Great outing for him”, interim manager Torey Lovullo said.
Kelly registered six swing/miss with his slider and changeup. The Notre Dame product permitted four runs in eight frames against Boston to end his July slate with a 3-1 record and 2.27 ERA.

Castillo did not play his first game of professional baseball in the United States until August 31, 2014, and that was in the Gulf Coast League, the lowest rung of the minors. 290 for the season. The White Sox will take on a left-hander (Miley) in this game and have an 11-14 record against left-handed starting pitchers this season.
