Oak Ridge’s Higgins commits to Vols

That’s because, Monday night, Tee Higgins became Tennessee’s second verbal commit for the 2017 recruiting class.

Higgins follows Brownsburg (Ind.) High Quarterback Hunter Johnson to Knoxville.

With less than two weeks to Tennessee’s season opener against Bowling Green in Nashville, Vols Head Coach Butch Jones likes what he sees from a former quarterback recruit welcoming a change of position.

“When you compare him to other 2017 kids, nobody throws the football like him”, 247sports national analyst Steve Wiltfong said.

Higgins committed to Tennessee over offers from Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Ole Miss and Texas A&M, among several others.

As a sophomore at Brownsburg, he completed 54% of his passes for 1,434 yards with 10 touchdowns and eight interceptions.

“Tennessee was my first offer”, Johnson told ESPN.

If Tennessee finds success on the field this fall, where they are expected to contend for the SEC’s Eastern Division crown, the fruits are likely to be found in future recruiting classes. “When Butch Jones, Mike DeBord took over, Hunter made his way down to Tennessee seven times from Indianapolis and just built that relationship up”.

With training camp wrapping up this weekend, one of the biggest surprises on Team 119 has been Freshman Jauan Jennings. I trust Coach Jones and the rest of the coaches there, and I feel like I will be very happy there. “He’s pushing everyone else and a lot of it is in your attitude and your daily approach”. Johnson is widely regarded as the best quarterback prospect in the 2017 class.

If the start of the 2017 class is a good indication, the Vols might contend for the No. 1 overall class in the country that year.
