Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams named top seeds for 2015 US Open

Top-ranked Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams have been announced as the top seeds for the US Open, which starts from Monday in New York. That’s why it’s rare for any player, no matter how good, to be even money to win a tournament.

The online betting site Bovada.lv on Tuesday, August 25, had Williams at -120 to take the title.

According to oddsmakers at GTBets, Williams is the heavy favorite, as she has odds of -175 to win. Next were Victoria Azarenka at 8:1 and Maria Sharapova at 9:1.

The singles draws for the 2015 US Open will be made at the National Tennis Centre on Thursday.

Williams, victor of the last three women’s singles crowns at Flushing Meadows and aiming to complete the first Grand Slam in 27 years, is followed on the seeding list by Romanian world number two Simona Halep, a 2014 French Open finalist.

British number one Murray, 28, beat Djokovic for the first time since the 2013 Wimbledon final to win the Montreal Masters this month and rise to number two in the world – before he was overtaken again by 34-year-old Federer when the Swiss won the Cincinnati Masters.

Winning a record-tying fourth consecutive US Open women’s title, a feat last achieved by Chris Evert in 1978, would give Williams something she has never achieved before – a calendar year Grand Slam – and link her with only a handful of the game’s greatest legends, men or women. She hasn’t reached the finals of the event since then, making six appearances. Winning a Grand Slam would be “a real big deal”, he said, the crowning achievement of her spectacular career.
