Pittsburgh Steelers News and Rumors: Team Signs Doug Legursky After Maurkice

Doug Legursky, 29, who replaced injured Maurkice Pouncey as the starting center in Super Bowl XLV, will get a chance to do it again after he signed with the Steelers this morning. He then suffered a finger injury on his left (non-throwing) hand against the Packers on Sunday.

Second update: Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin says Pouncey will need surgery on his ankle, but did not establish. a timetable for his return.

If the Wallace name is familiar, it is because he was once a member of the 49ers.

Vick would be a possibility to sign if the Steelers don’t think veteran backup Bruce Gradkowski will be ready to play to start the season.

A product of Marshall University, he was elevated from the Steelers’ practice squad in October 2008 after guard Kendall Simmons was placed on injured reserve.

Now’s the time for the ever popular “Next Man Up” philosophy to play out and Labriola explains how Tomlin has instilled this since he arrived in Pittsburgh in 2007.

Pouncey, considered a premier NFL center, has been hurt in two of the past three seasons, missing 15 games with a torn anterior cruciate ligament in 2013. There he struggled in run blocking and was responsible for an uncharacteristic penalty in San Diego’s week 4 game against Jacksonville.

The Steelers needed to add depth at center because there were no experienced players behind Cody Wallace. In 2014, Wallace filled in at left guard against the Panthers and Buccaneers.

It’s believed that Pouncey will be out for several weeks with the injury. That, too, should somewhat mitigate the void felt by Pouncey’s unfortunate injury.
