Teacher shortage impacts Oklahoma schools

Couple increased teacher expectations with the statewide testing frenzy, and that is a recipe for disaster. When educators say, “I’m colorblind” and claim not to see or be influenced by their students’ race, the net result is that students of color, their experiences, and their perspectives become “invisible” in the classroom.

On the first day of school, the Oakland Unified School District is short 15 teachers of what they need this school year. Oh my!

They also said they hoped the report would convince universities’ schools of education and other teacher-preparation programs to educate would-be teachers about these issues. Simply put, the numbers are going to look harsh to those who don’t know the full story.

The banner headline in the August 19 Review-Journal jumped out at me (“Water chief scrutinized”). She was joined by Education Minister George Werner and the leadership of the Education Ministry, Cabinet Ministers, worldwide Partners, educational authorities of private and public institutions, advocacy education organizations, and student advocacy institutions, among others.

A school should be willing to give you a trial run or test your kid out for at least a day or two in order to help you decide if this is the best fit for your wee one.

The times have changed, but I believe the value of an education has not changed nor has the role of parents.

“Each school has its own approach, with some schools seeing cellphones as a learning tool in the classroom and other schools not allowing cellphones in the classroom at all”, Moore wrote in an email.

The school district is holding a community engagement meeting tonight at 5:30 p.m.at 314 East 10th St.in Oakland.

This paradigm shift has lifted much of the responsibility from parents.

“You have to get in there and do ice breakers”, Baker said.

I am entering my 17 year as a science teacher. Despite a feeling from some parents that their perspective is unwelcome, he notes “we’re on the same side”.

Children always should board and exit the bus at locations that provide safe access to the bus or to the school building. But the friend ship will simply be in the wind, unsure of its course and direction.

If you’re facing this same situation, I have some advice. Many of our friends had planned their holiday time for the summer long ago, searching for cheap airfare or hotels and requesting specific time off from their workplaces.

■ Be your children’s parent and not their friend.

Where’s your favorite place to shop for school supplies? With these tidbits of information, the teacher can instantly connect with your child. The sweet, bubbly, loving teacher everyone’s gushing over isn’t yours.

■ Start or join a parents’ support group at your school. In other words, the problem isn’t that too few people entering the profession, but rather that too many are leaving it.

Ask for feedback on how your child is doing in the class.

■ Meet your child’s principal. They want to protect student privacy, but they don’t want to tangle innovative, tech-savvy teachers in bureaucratic red tape.

■ Set aside time each night for homework and school reflections.

“That makes this incredibly consequential for the future of young people’s lives”, said Harper.

■ Don’t buy them the latest fashions because they want them.

The low-stakes assessments will be based on the state curriculum standards, which are skills children should know by the end of a class or grade level.

■ Express your love to your child. I need to get them laminated, so they can be “official” wall hangings this year.
