Reds overpower Tigers in biggest comeback win of season
The sixth inning changed that. It was the first time in six career Major League starts that the Rockdale High School graduate has gone more than five innings and allowed less than four earned runs. Tom Uhlman APTigers pitcher Buck Farmer stands on the mound after giving up a two-run house to Reds second baseman Brandon Phillips (proper) within the sixth inning of the Tigers’ 12-5 loss to the Reds Monday in Cincinnati. “Nice to see some smiles in here, for sure”. Martinez’s home run was his 33rd of the season and Castellanos, his 14th.

Collin Balester, in his second appearance in a Reds uniform, picked up the win, as he pitched two scoreless innings, and Price didn’t mess around after taking the lead, using Burke Badenhop, J.J. Hoover and Aroldis Chapman to secure the team’s first win since August 13 in Los Angeles, when Sampson topped Mat Latos at Dodger Stadium.
At that point, Farmer’s day was done – he threw 4 1/3 hitless innings to start – but as manager Brad Ausmus signaled to his bad bullpen, the Reds were just getting started. The Tigers went into the inning up 5 runs and finished the inning down 5 runs. Following a walk to Votto, Phillips crushed his 10th homer just inside the left field foul pole, cutting the Tigers’ lead to 5-3.
“Now the Tigers are going through the same exact thing”, Nitkowski said. We were hitting the ball. The Reds had fallen into last place in the National League Central, hadn’t won in their last nine games and hadn’t even had a lead in their last 34 innings.
Detroit (59-65) then went to its bullpen, and the move didn’t work out.
Todd Frazier dropped a bunt single in front of the drawn back infield and scored on a double by Jay Bruce. Fourteen Reds batted in the inning against four Detroit pitchers, including reliever Al Alburquerque (3-1), who gave up three runs while not retiring any of the three batters he faced. He hit his ninth home run of the season in the fifth inning and is hitting. “Guys took advantage of some mistakes”. The Tigers visit the Cincinnati Reds in the makeup of a game that was rained out on June 18 Monday.
The Tigers provided Farmer with an early cushion.
It was the first time since 2009 the Tigers had allowed 10 runs in an inning, according to research on Baseball-Reference.com. Kinsler leads the key leagues with 49 multi-hit video games and has recorded a number of hits in 11 of 21 video games this month and has hit safely in 17 of them. Cincinnati gives the ball to rookie Keyvius Sampson for his 5th start of the year versus the visiting Tigers on Monday.
While Martinez launched a missile, Castellanos’ homer two batters later was a majestic fly to left, making the score 4-0.

Cabrera reportedly hurled a curse word or two after Ian Kinsler, whose stall is next to Cabrera’s in the Tigers’ clubhouse, became annoyed at a line of questioning. He struck out Martinez to end the inning, his fifth strikeout in four innings, on his 100th pitch. He allowed five runs and nine hits.
