South Carolina to start sophomore QB Connor Mitch in opener
But, when the University of South Carolina coach announced before Tuesday’s practice that redshirt sophomore quarterback Connor Mitch would be the Gamecocks’ starting quarterback, it confirmed what most believed the choice would be for some time. The Gamecocks do have one of the top receivers in the country in Pharoh Cooper.

Mitch said he is ready for the job but understands he must step up the intensity and leadership even more as the team prepares for its opener September 3 at North Carolina. “The competition was extremely close but we had to make a decision. We’re going to give him all the support we can”.
South Carolina’s offense has been a juggernaut the past few years with quarterbacks Connor Shaw and Dylan Thompson putting up huge numbers. “He can definitely do it”, Wakefield head coach Rod Sink said. Mitch will begin the season as the starter, but proving he should hold onto the spot will be an ongoing process.
Mitch played in two games past year in a mop-up role against Furman and South Alabama.
A day later, Mitch got his wish. Instead, he said the competition lifted backups Orth, Scarnecchia and Nunez and prepared them for action if needed this season.
Mitch is likely to concede at least some snaps to talented freshman Lorenzo Nunez, however.
Mitch was 2-of-6 passing for 19 yards last season in two games in 2014.

Winning at summer camp is one thing, but Mitch anticipates a tougher task during the season.
