Kenya made history at the world championships on Wednesday when javelin thrower Julius Yego won the first gold medal in a field event for a country renowned as a cradle of distance running.

Ihab Abdelrahman El-Sayed of Egypt won silver in 88.99, while Tero Pitkamaki of Finland finished third in 87.64. He missed out on the bronze medal at the 2013 world championships in Moscow on the final throw, but was not be be denied a medal this time.

Yego said his win, alongside Nicholas Bett’s first-ever gold for Kenya in the 400-meter hurdles, shouldn’t come as a huge surprise – or be met with raised eyebrows.

Defending champion Vitezslav Vesely of the Czech Republic could only finish eighth with a best of 83.13m.

Cuba’s Yarisley Silva won gold in the women’s pole vault title.

Hyvin Kiyeng Jepkemoi won Kenya’s other gold Wednesday with a thrilling victory in the women’s 3,000m steeplechase, finishing just ahead of Tunisia’s Habiba Ghribi and Germany’s Gesa Felicitas Krause. Montano, who always competes with a flower in her hair, appealed but the IAAF rejected the protest after reviewing video of the race. As comfortable as the American was, Usain Bolt went one step further securing a season best of 19.95 to win his heat even though he was able to power down from around the 120-meter mark.
