Cancer Recurrence Cases Rising in the United States
Doctors say almost 1 in 5 new cancer cases in the U.S. now involve someone who has had the disease before. Second cancer means a different tissue type or a different site. Judith Bernstein of suburban Philadelphia is an extreme example.

“There was a while when I was getting one cancer diagnosis after another”. Within the 1970s, it was exclusively 9 %. Over the last four decades, the general situation aggravated: the number of cancer sufferers rose by 2 times while those of with second cancers by 3 times.
Second cancers can also come up from the identical gene mutations or danger elements, similar to smoking, that spurred the primary one. Studies of large populations of cancer survivors will be needed to help determine which survivors of a first cancer are at greater risk for a second cancer based on their treatment, other cancer risk factors, or genetic susceptibilities. Psychologically, a second cancer often is more traumatizing than the first. “When you have your next diagnosis, it’s fear of the known”. But this paints a more positive picture than you would think. This doesn’t mean her cancer came back – they are entirely new cancer that started on their own. “So whatever time I get forward here I consider free time”, he said.
Put yourself in the shoes of Bernstein, the above mentioned woman from Philadelphia who suffered from eight types of cancers. She went to a psychiatrist after one analysis and “spent 4 days very upset” after the newest one.
Some of this increase is due to the success of cancer treatment.
■For those who get a second most cancers, “take a deep breath”, Rowland stated. Remedy decisions could also be extra restricted. Some medicine even have lifetime dose limits to keep away from nerve or coronary heart injury.
About 19% of diagnosed cancers are occurring in people who already had and survived a different type of cancer.
■Have a proper survivorship plan, a blueprint for the longer term that features a detailed abstract of the remedy you acquired and what sort of monitoring is required. “And we have more advanced screening tools to see these cancers”. Treatments improve every day, and there are more resources, including social media, for support, and doctors are more used to treating cancer a couple of times.
