Former No. 1 recruit Josh Rosen will start for UCLA

Neuheisel, the son of former UCLA coach and quarterback Rick Neuheisel, was a sentimental favorite to win the job.

It required three weeks of summer camp for UCLA’s coaches to be sure.

A true freshman will start at quarterback for UCLA this fall.

Mora said a day earlier that no decisions had been made regarding a starting quarterback.

Starting as a true freshman when you’re so highly-regarded out of high school probably isn’t the easiest thing as many people will be placing unfair expectations upon him.

Per the Periscope of Edward Lewis of Rivals.com, when asked about telling Rosen, Mora said the freshman reacted casually and was quite excited and the first thing Rosen said was, “Can I go call my mom and dad?”

Though it was speculated that the Bruins could use two QBs, Mora had affirmed that he is all about having one quarterback play in his system. “He became less flustered and became more settled and had a better understanding of where the ball needed to go and how to get it there”.

On August 21, Mora discussed the strides Rosen has made since arriving in Los Angeles. “I want to put a guy in that position and support the heck out of him and help him have success and rally around him if he’s struggling”. He also announced on Wednesday that Rosen would be available to speak to the press on Thursday, but won’t speak to reporters again during the season.

Rosen beat out redshirt junior Jerry Neuheisel for the job.

But that was with Brett Hundley running the show.

The Bruins open their season against Virginia on September 5 at the Rose Bowl. Rosen will be able to rely on that defense, an experienced offensive line, the Pac-12’s leading rusher last season in running back Paul Perkins, and a talented collection of tall receivers.
