Cespedes’ three homers help Mets rout Rockies; Astros down Dodgers

Niese improved to 2-3 with a 4.65 ERA in eight career outings versus Colorado by limiting the Rockies to two runs over seven innings in a home win on August 10. In the sixth inning, Charlie Blackmon reached first by getting plunked by Verrett.

The Mets opted to skip Harvey on Sunday to avoid having to shut him down later in this season to preserve his innings since he’s on an innings limit.

But more impressive was the joke he made to Matt Harvey this weekend.

“I knew they’d have a better idea coming in and seeing me a second time in so short of time”. “He laughed. He’s a good guy”.

“Yeah, we were playing with fire”, Pirates starting pitcher Gerrit Cole said via MLB.com.

Collins said the Mets had long planned to give a break to Harvey, adding the team’s ace was on board with the idea for the brief letup in his workload as NL East-leading New York gears up for its closing run. “Right now we have to take each one that we can get”.

This being said, the Mets have now won 9 in a row against Colorado, dating back to May 4th, 2014.

Brewers 10, Nationals Three: Bryce Harper hit his 31st residence run, prime prospect Trea Turner made his debut at shortstop, however they could not cease Washington from dropping the opener of a nine-game homestand following a Three-7 West Coast journey.

The Mets, fresh off consecutive 14-run outbursts, capitalized on more sloppy play by the Rockies, and especially starter David Hale, who let in two runs on back-to-back wild pitches in the second inning. Rockies RHP Kyle Kendrick (right shoulder inflammation) threw a 35-pitch bullpen session Friday and is scheduled to throw 45 pitches in a simulated game Tuesday at Atlanta before the Rockies-Braves game. The 13-page deal signed Friday by the league and players’ association allows the baseball commissioner to issue discipline for “just cause”, the same standard used under the sport’s collective bargaining agreement.

The left-hander, however, didn’t need much help five days later when he tossed a five-hitter in a 5-0 win over San Diego for his first career complete game. He allowed four hits and struck out eight batters.

“That first inning you could kind of see he wasn’t in a real good rhythm”, Collins said.

Among the eight hits he allowed was a grand slam by Yoenis Cespedes, the first of three homers on the night by the Mets’ slugger who finished with a career-high seven RBIs.

Colorado has lost 11 of 13. Wright has been out since April 14.

Collins did not hold back Saturday, bringing in Tyler Clippard in the eighth and closer Jeurys Familia for the second straight night with a five-run lead. Weiss said he checked out OK but he wanted to give him a day off….

Mets: RHP Jacob deGrom (12-6, 1.98) will open a four-game series at Philadelphia on Monday.
