Bexley High School makes key lists

Fair Lawn High School has been named one of the top 500 high schools in the country. It is created to determine which schools best prepare students for college. KM Global was one of only 14 Wisconsin high schools on the list, and was ranked 496 in the nation.

Sevastopol ranked 242 in the country out of 500 public high schools.

Schools found to be in the top 70th percentile in each state are evaluated for college enrollment, graduation rate, weighted Advanced Placement and worldwide Baccalaureate classes/dual enrollment composite, weighted SAT/ACT test composite, student retention and counselor-to-student ratio.

Aragon High School serves 1,525 students, was recently named a Gold Ribbon School by the California Department of Education, and graduated almost all of its students past year, more than 97 percent of which were bound for college.

So why didn’t any midstate high schools make the cut? “It’s also a testament to how hard our students work to achieve their goals and their drive to do their personal best”.

Some 22 Pennsylvania high schools made Newsweek’s annual ranking of America’s best, but none are in the midstate.

Although Kobza is aware that not all BHHS students will go to college – some may chose trade schools or enter the workforce – he wants all students to be prepared upon graduation. Overall he is proud of the high school’s standing on the list but feels that the work for student success starts early. Thomas Jefferson High School in Alexandria, Virginia, won top honors as the best in the nation.

Six of the schools in the top 10 are located in New Jersey with High Technology High School in Lincroft at two and Bergen County Academies at five.

New Century says its students average scoring 24 on the ACT, with almost half of test takers meeting all four ACT College Readiness Benchmarks.

“A lot of this has to do with the foundation that’s built starting in kindergarten”, he said, adding that BHHS’s ranking on the list is a byproduct of teacher, parent and community support and an effort to “focus as much as we can on [our students’] needs”.
