Biden, congressional colleagues pay homage to Louis Stokes

The Rev. Jesse Jackson and Cleveland Mayor Frank Jackson joined Stokes’ family in paying tribute to the former congressman at a memorial service Monday inside Cleveland City Hall.

Stokes’ grandchildren told mourners how he and their grandmother attended all the big events in their lives and forged tight bonds.

The descendants of a slave and sons of a domestic worker, Louis Stokes and his brother, Carl, the younger by two years, grew up in a public housing development in Cleveland and became two of the most noted Ohio politicians of their era. As the motorcade left Olivet Institutional Baptist Church for Stokes’ burial in Lakeview Cemetery, it made one last drive by that street, which is now known as “Louis and Carl B. Stokes Way”. Hundreds of people gathered at his funeral to celebrate his life.
