Sooners Name Baker Mayfield As Starting Quarterback
It appears Baker Mayfield, formerly of Lake Travis High School and Texas Tech, has won the starting quarterback job with the Oklahoma Sooners.

From the time he arrived on campus, Mayfield carried himself with the confidence of a starting QB.
According to reports from the Tulsa World and The Oklahoman, Baker Mayfield will start for the Sooners this fall, replacing last year’s signal caller Trevor Knight.
Mayfield, who beat out Trevor Knight and Cody Thomas in a quarterback battle that has been going on since the spring, is a walk-on who transferred from Texas Tech in January of 2013. After walking on with the Red Raiders, he threw for 2,315 yards and 12 touchdowns in 8 games, but after losing the starting job to Davis Webb, transfered to OU and walked on for the 2014 season. He let Oklahoma officials know that he would be enrolling into the university with the hopes of walking onto the football team.
Oklahoma’s season opener is September 5 at home against Akron. Mayfield was denied immediate eligibility last offseason after transferring from Texas Tech but did practice with the team.

Mayfield was named Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week and earned multiple national-player-of-the-week honors after completing 43 of 60 passes for 413 yards and four touchdowns (added another on the ground) in a season-opening win over SMU.
