After slow begin, Jordan Spieth surges into rivalry at PGA Championship

“I need to go to the range and figure out my ball-striking a little bit better”, he said. John Daly lost his cool and then lost a 6-iron when he heaved it in Lake Michigan.

Jordan Spieth, looking to carve out another slice of golf history at this week’s PGA Championship, delivered another special performance to move into contention before the second round was suspended late on Friday. The storm was severe enough to topple the main scoreboard at the entrance and rip flags off the poles atop some of the grandstands. PGA Tour Media announced play will commence at 7 a.m. Connecticut.

England’s Justin Rose is now one off the pace with one hole to play, while David Lingmerth and Harris English sit two back. He headed to the 18th tee, feeling good about being able to finish. “I said, ‘The end is in sight.’ And 30 seconds later, they blew the horn”.

“It’s a goal of mine to capture all four throughout my career”.

Tiger Woods, for all his struggles in the majors this year, can at least say he made it to the weekend in three of them.

Iwata’s only previous major experience came in three British Opens, where he has yet to make the cut.

The leaderboard was as clouded as the sky over Whistling Straits.

Rory McIlroy shot another 1-under 71, with “so-so iron play”.

The 22-year-old is attempting to become only the third man, after Tiger Woods and Ben Hogan, to win three majors in a calendar year.

Scott Piercy (70) and Brendan Steele (69) joined Spieth at 6-under 138.

Day also looks solid in his round with just the one blemish on his scorecard coming at the challenging par-4 9 and counteracted by six birdies.

After that, he said, the thought of shooting 27 on the back nine crossed his mind. He was frustrated not to pull the shot back at the par-five 16th, but drained a 24-footer for birdie at 17.

However, Jones was trumped by fellow Australian Jason Day, who has the lead in the the tournament at 15 under after firing a six-under-par 66 in the third round.

“I opened my big mouth to the boys playing with us”, Rose said. Jones had five birdies and no bogies through 12 holes. “So, yeah, I’m very, very pleased to have a chance to win another major”.

However, the 31-year-old was then penalised two strokes after it was ruled he had grounded his club in a fairway bunker before hitting his second shot, even though spectators had been trampling all over the hazard.

Johnny Miller hit the mark first, at the U.S. Open in 1973. “We’ve got some scoring holes and some tough ones to finish on”. Yesterday the wind was so strong and the green was really hard that I can’t stop the ball with my wedges.

Dustin Johnson, the 18-hole leader, took a brief lead at 8 under until he ran into trouble on the par-5 11th with a wicked lie in the bunker that led to bogey. He is now at 4-under 140 for the tournament, two shots off the lead.

Rory McIlroy has plenty of work to do to reach PGA leaders (USAToday). He already won the Masters and U.S. Open. At this point it would be really cool, but it isn’t a grand slam. He also had a double-bogey on 15 and a pair of bogeys on the front nine before climbing to 15-under for the tournament, two strokes ahead of Spieth.

“You can never count out Jordan right now with hos he’s playing, especially this year”, Day said.

Again though, Day alluded to his confidence being at an all-time high, in a sign that – after overcoming vertigo on the course recently – it would take a lot to unsettle him.

Day in nine-under through 14 while Jones is on the same score but is two holes back.

Branden Grace shot an eight-under 64, carding eight birdies and not a single bogey to blemish his card.

Daly made a 10 on the hole, en route to a 10-over 82. He shot 82 and will miss the cut at 11 over.

Jason Day has produced a birdie blitz to take the lead in the 3rd round of the US PGA Championship
