Bassitt, A’s bullpen knocked around in 8-2 loss to Mariners

Pitching has been a huge reason why Oakland has lost all season, and yesterday’s game against the Seattle Mariners seemed to be going to same way.

Danny Valencia and Josh Reddick each homered for the A’s.

That was it for Chavez, who was coming off one of his best starts of the season, a win over the Dodgers last Wednesday in which he went eight innings and allowed two hits and two runs.

Cruz has 16 homers during his streak, the first player with 15 or more home runs during an on-base streak of at least 30 games since Jim Edmonds for the Cardinals in 2004. “We’ll see how he is tomorrow”, manager Bob Melvin said. All of those other guys on the list were consistent at what they did, and Cano becoming the first to do it to open a career speaks to the consistency that he possesses and puts on display not only night in and night out, but over the span of eleven years.

After Mike Montgomery got shelled for seven hits and five runs in 1 1/3 innings, including Marcus Semien’s homer, four relievers held the Athletics scoreless the rest of the way. Seattle added a run in the sixth when Marte led off with a double and scored on Nelson Cruz’s second RBI single of the game.

Chavez, seldom the recipient of run support, got some love from his teammates right away.

It was the A’s 30th one-run loss of the season, tied for second most in Oakland history; in 1976, the A’s had 32 one-run losses. The four runs and seven hits allowed are season highs for the young right-hander, who has a 1-6 record despite a 2.82 ERA.

Tri-City pitchers scattered nine hits as the Dust Devils beat Hillsboro 5-1 in Northwest League baseball action at Ron Tonkin Field.

A’s: LHP Felix Doubront, who left Monday’s game after two innings with a right foot contusion after being hit by a line drive, was sore Tuesday. “We’ll see how I feel tomorrow”.

Cano lined an RBI single into center for a 1-0 lead, and Franklin Gutierrez followed with a three-run homer over the center-field fence.

Trumbo hit his eighth with the Mariners, a solo shot.

Athletics: RHP Kendall Graveman was placed on the 15-day disabled list with a strained left oblique. To take his position, the team remembered infielder Max Muncy from Triple A Nashville. He has a 8.18 ERA in August losing his past two starts.

But after that, Hernandez went back to being the pitcher that he’s been for most of his career. “First time in a competitive setting in over three months, I had been quite happy with myself”, Paxton said. He needs one win to match his career high. The Mariners won the game, 6-5, because Melvin waited too long to pull Chavez when it was clear he had no ability to challenge the heart of the Seattle lineup despite having the lead.
