Christmas in August: Walmart’s Holiday Layaway Comes Early

In the increasingly aggressive holiday sales market, Wal-Mart will begin offering layaway options on items starting tomorrow, according to a report from the CBS Detroit. It’s a full two weeks earlier than past year.

Over 40,000 items will be available for layaway, the company said.

The discounter will kick off its Christmas marketing plans on Friday with a Toy Week that will feature plenty of items tied to “Star Wars: The Force Awakens”.

Wal-Mart said it will have 500 new Star Wars products in stores on Sept 4, as part of a global roll-out of movie-related merchandise at various retailers. Customers will have more time to pay for their items this year, 90 days instead of the 60 days they were given last year.

Layaway programs can have a sizeable impact on a retailer’s sales. There will still be a 10 percent down payment and a $50 minimum purchase.
