Shane Mosley vs. Ricardo Mayorga: victor, Recap and Reaction

Fighting each other in a long awaited rematch at middleweight, 43-year-old Shane Mosley (48-9-1, 40 KOs) defeated 41-year-old Ricardo Mayorga (31-9-1, 25 KOs) by a 6th round body shot stoppage tonight at the Forum in Inglewood, California.

“I think I was a C-plus, but I can do better”. But his right hand just couldn’t miss from the first round on.

In the fifth frame, Mosley started to slow down considerably.

“All the fans wanted to see me fight”, Mosley said. What made you want to come out of retirement? Both men are still competing in their mid-40s. But things didn’t change and once again Mosley was the victor. According to his own court testimony (in a successful bid to stave off the attack of Don King, who claimed rights to Mayorga), only between 2,000 and 3,000 tickets had been sold as of Monday and the $50 PPV card will be in direct competition with the much more appealing Leo Santa Cruz vs. Abner Mares bout on “free” ESPN. For the sake of his long-term health, it would be advisable for him to hang up the gloves for good. Mosley again proved to still be the better man. No, it wasn’t the Shane Mosley that was a pound-for-pound fighter 15 years ago. He did knock out Mayorga in the 12th round when they fought in 2008 at Carson. At the very least, he was going to make him work for it. Mosley was in control throughout the first two rounds as he popped the cigarette smoking Mayorga with the jab and ripped him to the head and torso with combinations. Luna, 21, used her reach to keep from sustaining too many flush shots.

The unfortunate part is that a PPV flop will cost Mosley dearly and, perhaps, force him back into the ring under the worst possible conditions- in search of a payday and at the mercy of whoever wields the checkbook. He’s now lost six fights by KO in his career. I want to win the world title.
