The Gujarat High Court has ordered a CID (Crime) probe into Shwetang’s death, which as per the autopsy report, was caused by injuries to the brain.
Shwetang Patel, was detained by the police from his residence in Bapunagar area and died in the custody due to severe beating by police on Tuesday night. Local BJP MLA Vallabh Kakadiya and former state home minister Gordhan Zadaphia also attended the funeral. Since early morning, senior police officers including Joint Commissioner of Police (JCP) Manoj Shashidharan, Deputy CP Shweta Shrimali and Assistant CP K D Pandya along with their staff arrived at Bapunagar and supervised the arrangements.
Curfew has been imposed in Ahmedabad, Surat and Mehsana after massive violence broke out last night across the state.
The HC also ordered immediate transfer out of city limits of those police officers who are allegedly involved in Swetang Patel’s (21) death while observing that public at large may not feel apprehensive about any inaction on the part of the state. Palak claimed no one from the government has approached the family yet.
Swetang was allegedly taken away forcibly by police on August 25 during violence in Patel community’s agitation demanding reservation under OBC category. “This is non-compliance of the high court order and a contempt of court as well”, Mangukia added. A plea was moved by his mother Prabhaben Patel, which said her son was allegedly beaten up by the police and that he ultimately succumbed to his injuries.

The court ordered CID to investigate the case stating that an officer outside the Bapu nagar police station jurisdiction will conduct an inquiry and submit the report to CID. However, police did not clamp curfew as the funeral procession went off without any untoward incident.
