1 man killed, 2 injured in shooting on Venice Beach

The gunman fled in a black SUV after the shooting, and police arrested a suspect about six hours later but did not release his name.

One person was killed and another wounded following a shooting on the popular Venice Beach boardwalk early Sunday morning, police said.

Officials later identified the victim as 26-year-old Jascent Jamal Lee Warren.

The suspect was held in lieu of $1 million bail.

City News Service says the incident occurred in an area where homeless people frequently sleep. LAPD initally reported a third person had been injured but later said the injury may have been a result of the altercation.

Witnesses told the station the owner of the hotel was with the gunman at the time of the shooting. “It’s ruthless, it’s not necessary”, witness Ras Whitelion said.

The victim was known as an activist who helped other homeless people.

Sris Sinnathamby, of Venice, was taken into custody around 8:10 a.m. on Sunday for his involvement in the murder, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.

Sgt. Barry Montgomery says the shooting was apparently triggered by a dispute among locals, but he didn’t elaborate.
