Chris Heston: Will Start Sunday

It’ll depend on how Cain recovers, how everyone else in the rotation is faring and what the Giants’ needs are at that time.

The Giants placed former ace Matt Cain on the disabled list, as he has continued to struggle.

Cain received a cortisone shot and hopes to resume throwing within a week. He allowed 11 homers in 10 starts and seven in his last five. The good news: The MRI came back clean aside from the irritation.

Cain said he felt something in the elbow during his start Tuesday in a loss to the Cubs.

“My elbow looks good, nothing out of the ordinary”, he said. Fortunately for Cain, there doesn’t appear to be anything seriously wrong with his elbow, and assuming he’s healthy, he could return before the season is over.

“I’ll do whatever these guys need”, Cain said. “The objective was to get back to where I was early in the season”.

Some other housekeeping notes on a busy day…

“That’s the whole goal”, Heston said. He admitted he wasn’t originally thrilled about the move because he wants to compete, but he pointed out that the staff has a long track record of success and he was willing to do whatever was needed. He’ll play for Single-A San Jose on Saturday and Sunday. I’ve thought all along that Lincecum would return September 1 and eventually get into a game, probably at home, but it’s sounding a bit iffy lately.
