According to attorney Joseph P. Cataldo, Carter was “brainwashed” into supporting Roy’s plan for suicide.

According to prosecutors, the two had struck up a romantic relationship – mostly online – in 2012. You’re strong… I love you to the moon and back and deeper than the ocean and higher than the pines, too, babe forever and always.

“Do you know where your brother is?” she allegedly asked Mr Roy’s sister in a text. “You can’t keep doing this every day”.

“Okay, you can do this”, Ms Carter wrote.

CARTER: When are you gonna do it? “Eventually he gets her to endorse his plan”. He had started a gasoline-powered generator in the truck and died of carbon monoxide poisoning.

Carter was confident that it would work and told him why. “You lose consciousness with no pain”.

Later after Roy gathered everything he would need, Carter sent a final series of texts.

“WELL WHEN ARE YOU GETTING IT?” she texted. “You always seem to have an excuse”.

She allegedly counselled him to overcome his doubts about suicide, and allegedly texted him comments such as “tonight is the night” and “you just have to do it”, according to court documents.

“The teenager allegedly texted a friend after Roy’s death saying: “[if the police] read my messages with him I’m done.

“Conrad, I told you I’ll take care of them”.

Early on July 12, 2014, Carter and Roy were once again discussing the deed. Her lawyer says they met only a few times in person. “I don’t know”.

According to Phillip, Carter suggested that Roy take Benadryl to make the process easier, and that he think about going to an empty parking lot before the sun came up. His body was found in his truck which was parked in a local carpark on July 13, 2014.

Days before his suicide, Carter texted a friend named Samantha and claimed that Roy was missing – though she was communicating with him at exactly the same time about how to fix his father’s broken generator.

“Like, honestly I could have stopped it”, Carter texted Samantha months later.

“I was so proud of him when he got his captain’s license”, Conrad Roy Sr., the boy’s grief-stricken farther, told WBZ. But Bristol County prosecutors say she urged him on and instructed him in how to do it.

Carter’s attorney, for his part, is arguing that this narrative is backwards.

Her case returns to court on October 2. If not, Michelle could face up to 20 years in prison. Carter reportedly publicised the event, writing: “Life can be tough, but helping others makes it easier”. They also allege that after Roy’s death, Carter organized a softball tournament to raise money for mental health awareness in honor of Roy and posted several messages on social media about suicide prevention and how much she missed Roy. She said via text:”I think your parents know you’re in a really bad place”.
