Ericsson wins FDD deal with Airtel

“Strengthening our position as a leading software company, as well as establishing early leadership in the standardisation and realisation of the next generation of mobile networks or 5G, which is evolving”. Ericsson India Head Paolo Colella said the company is the market leader on LTE technology with 40 per cent of the world’s LTE smartphone traffic now served by its network. “This is sure to accelerate uptake of IoT and allow us to quickly reach our customers with useful IoT services”.

It is being said that Ericsson will be supplying and installing while managing services for WCDMA radio access networks. This reduced complexity cuts device cost by 60 percent, as compared to Category 4. The device power-saving mode for LTE & GSM introduces a deep sleep state to save off-use power, and the extended discontinuous reception for GSM extends the sleep cycles in inactive mode.

Ericsson, at its flagship technology event Ericsson Connect here in Delhi, also released its next major software Ericsson Networks Software 16A which will feature a new suite of LTE software upgrades targeting the indoor space. Ken Stewart, Chief Wireless Technologist and Fellow, Intel Corporation, says: “Connectivity is critical to mass adoption of new IoT applications for smart cities and industries”. Ericsson is expanding its use of channel partners, such as Anixter, and working with leading real estate developers and property managers, including Skanska, helping to create new business opportunities. “And, these new features, combined with Ericsson’s end-to-end solutions, flexible go-to-market and business models and proactive relationships with key device ecosystem partners, ensure that our leading operators not only keep pace, but set the pace”, he added. The solution works seamlessly with the existing 2G and 3G networks deployed by Ericsson. “These innovations put our mobile operator customers solidly on the road to 5G”. Ericsson plays a role in all levels of IoT transformation, from rollout to enterprise and business processes, platforms and cloud and radio connectivity.

Devices that support these advances will become available this year, in line with the commercial availability of the Ericsson Networks Software 16A. Further, Ericsson said the software will enhance indoor coverage for GSM solutions to enable the usage of IoT applications in remote locations and deep within buildings underground. The first challenge is cost, and the new software addresses that problem by supporting LTE Category 0 with half-duplex operation in FDD to limit functionality and capability to what is specifically required for IoT applications, such as large-scale sensor and smart meter deployments.

Even so, there will be a lot of M2M devices out there and gadgets vastly more advanced than what we are used to today, and Ericsson is ensuring its networks are able to handle it, via Ericsson Networks Software 16A.
