Alumni from East Tennessee State University’s football teams of the past stopped by Darren and Kortney Caldwell’s “Buc Mobile” Thursday evening to scribe their names onto his “Alumni Wall”. I’ve said “excited” probably 300 million times in the last 2 1/2 years, but we genuinely are.

“It’s our goal to give our fans every opportunity to be at the home opener on September 3”, said ETSU Senior Associate Athletic Director/COO Scott Carter. “Bringing it back, we’ve kind of found that lost generation”.

Kennesaw State’s football program is off and running – literally. While that was going on, ETSU was doing the same thing with former Tennessee coach Phil Fulmer in command.

Off-campus organizations also contributed to the ETSU atmosphere with the Carnegie Hotel, Citi call center and Food City having tents, food and beverages of their own. Kennesaw State already has an 8,660-seat stadium on campus.

Kennesaw State, located in Kennesaw, Georgia, and a member of the Big South Conference, scored 49 unanswered points after it trailed 13-7 in the second quarter. (FCS is the division formerly known as 1-AA.) The Owls will play 11 games this season, including six at Fifth Third Bank Stadium in Kennesaw.

“Now we don’t have to travel for football games, spending most of the day traveling instead of tailgating”, Fee said.

Thursday night, the Buccaneers will play their first game since the program folded in 2003.

The two schools took different paths in choosing head coaches, though both picked guys with area ties.
