Tottenham in talks to cancel Emmanuel Adebayor’s contract

Tottenham are keen to listen to offers for Adebayor and could welcome Villa’s move for him today.

It has emerged that Emmanuel Adebayor’s expected transfer from Spurs to Aston Villa was scuppered by God.

According to the Daily Telegraph, Adebayor wanted a huge payoff to leave White Hart Lane and even though Spurs were willing to meet him halfway and there was a chance to join Aston Villa, he pulled out because he was waiting for direction from a higher power. A year remaining on his lucrative £100,000-a-week contract is also said to have been a factor. Head coach Mauricio Pochettino has made it clear there is no way back for the former Arsenal and Manchester City man.

Adebayor is understood to have then consulted his pastor over the prospect of moving to the Midlands before finally deciding against the switch, much to the frustration of Villa manager Tim Sherwood.

West Ham had discussed the possibility of signing the striker on loan, but they are now unable to do so having already taken two players on temporary transfer from Premier League clubs in Carl Jenkinson and Victor Moses respectively.

That meant Adebayor’s only hope of joining the Hammers before January was to agree a pay-off with Tottenham, but that proved to be impossible.

Adebayor made just 13 appearances in the top flight last season and slipped down the pecking order due to personal problems and a lack of form.

But the Daily Mirror’s chief football writer John Cross claims West Ham could yet resurrect the move before Tuesday’s 6pm deadline.
