IBM teaming up with ARM
Going forward, products powered by ARM’S chips will automatically register with the IBM IoT Foundation and connect with IBM analytics services, quickly delivering data to the cloud for prompt analysis.

The deal will see IBM products use ARM’s mbed operating system platform for internet-connected devices in order to provide “out of the box connectivity” to allow data to be quickly collected and analysed from devices including industrial applications, weather sensors and wearable technology.
Internet of things (IoT) collaborators IBM and ARM are to deepen their partnership by integrating IBM’s IoT Foundation cloud platform with ARM’s mbed-enabled devices to deliver analytics services.
Security systems capable of helping organizations protect IoT data as rigorously as they do their own confidential financial, IP and strategy information. The connection also gives manufacturers the option to include the delivery of events to users, such as remote equipment control or alert sending, such as in the case of device breakdowns.
The collaboration is expected to enable new IoT services like predictive maintenance, asset and operational risk management along with “managed continuous engineering”, IBM’s service offering aimed at manufacturers of IoT devices.
“IBM is mbed with ARM” means that ARM’s Internet-of-Things (IoT) cloud interface for microcontrollers, called mbed, now dovetails with IBM’s IoT Foundation. “Working with IBM we have tapped into our respective company’s expertise to create a platform that is built and customized for the unique nature in which companies are utilizing IoT”. “Lastly, we have eliminated the need to set up hardware within traditional IT infrastructure – allowing a drastic reduction in provisioning time”.
– “At Gibson Innovations, design and quality lead the way”.
In an IoT world, Ramamoorthy believes information is the “fuel” that is used to change the physical state of environments through devices that are not general-purpose computers but, instead, devices and services that are designed for specific purposes.

Greenstein also thinks that IoT providers will be more inclined to use IBM’s professional cloud services, rather than start to scratch with their own or using a cloud service without IoT specialization. “This is extremely valuable in maintaining and increasing loyalty among our customers”, said Henry Chiarelli, Executive Vice President of Gibson Brands. This cost-saving damage limitation is best achieved by combining the knowledge and communications protocols of different vendors at different levels of the ICT stack, according IBM’s General Manager for the Internet of Things, Pat Toole.
