He said: “This is an exciting time in Jet2.com’s history as we invest in our next phase of growth and development with this order of new 737-800NG aircraft”.
The order lifts Boeing’s order backlog of current generation 737s to 1,400 planes. These aircraft will be delivered between September 2016 and April 2018.
Summer trading has been “strong”, the carrier said.
“Today’s order for 27 additional 737-800NGs will be delivered over the next two years and will offer Jet2.com the necessary cost effective, comfortable and dependable environment to allow us to continue our already highly successful family friendly business”, said executive chairman of Jet2.com, Philip Meeson.
They are to be used to take the airline’s customers to leisure destinations in the Mediterranean, the Canary Islands and numerous popular tourist cities in Europe.
The aircraft will be funded by internal resources and debt, Bloomberg reported, while the company’s shares rose over 10 percent on Thursday trading on the London Stock Exchange. The company commenced commercial aircraft operations in 1983 and passenger flights to sun destinations from Leeds Bradford Airport in 2003.
The company said its business has also achieved higher airline ticket yields and load factors than in summer 2014, against a backdrop of slightly lower seat capacity.
