Saturday’s cross-state doubleheader begins at 11 a.m. Central in Lawrence as South Dakota State takes on Kansas. And while that outcome was pretty much expected, South Dakota should still be concerned about its ineffective run game (61 rushing yards on 1.7 yards per carry) going into its meeting with U.C. Davis next weekend. But with Charles Jones returning in the backfield and an experienced offensive line, Kansas State wants to get back to its running roots.

Bill Snyder is just as keen as anybody else to see how the Kansas State’s new-look offense, led by sophomore quarterback Jesse Ertz, will fare in its opener against South Dakota on Saturday.

The Wildcats defeated the Coyotes 34-0.

On a play in which he was supposed to take the snap and spike the ball to stop the clock and set up a potential tying field goal, Kansas quarterback Montell Cozart fumbled. Two plays later, Mengarelli caught a 29-yard scoring pass from Lujan to make it 31-7 with 12:38 left in the first half. The drive eventually stalled before Jay Carlson booted a 28-yard field goal.

Kansas is a basketball school. “That was a very tough locker room to look into for my first day as head football coach in division I football”.

ABOUT SOUTH DAKOTA STATE (2014: 9-5): Under coach John Stiegelmeier, the Jackrabbits are one of six FCS programs to appear in the playoffs in each of the last three seasons and have been ranked in both FCS polls every week since October 29, 2012.

Apparently someone forgot to tell the Jayhawks that the game started this morning, as they kept hitting the snooze button during the first quarter.

The Jackrabbits put the ball in the hands of redshirt freshman Isaac Wallace coming down the stretch, marching 75 yards on 10 plays for what proved to be the game-winning score with 6 minutes and 18 seconds to play.

“You never think about stuff like that until it happens to you”, Cozart said of his game-ending fumble.
