A Closer Look at ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ Social Media Chatter
The film also had the biggest Thursday preview gross, at $57 million, and was the fastest to ever reach the $100 million and $200 million benchmarks. But enough gushing, let’s move on to the records.

It says something about how much the movie industry has changed that Jaws-widely regarded as the film that invented blockbuster season-held its crown for two years, while Jurassic World only had history’s biggest opening weekend for six paltry months. Nearly forgot largest per theater average for a wide release, $59,982 (previously Jurassic World at $48,855).
Its previous full-year record was US$4.73 billion which was set in 2013.
What else is next? The report notes that despite the size of China’s movie market and the millions of Chinese social media users, Star Wars failed to gain traction. The Christmas day record will most definitely also fall, currently $24.6 million (Sherlock Holmes), and that’s about it for now (the very near future).
Star Wars: The Force Awakens unsurprisingly broke box office records.
Poor Rey. Not only was she left behind on Jakku, literally counting down the days until someone would come back for her, she finished Star Wars: The Force Awakens still unsure about who her parents really are – thus leaving us guessing as well.
The domestic take is all the more impressive for happening in December, where the previous record-holder – The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey – stood at $85 million.
The Force Awakens is a runaway train at the box office, and not even Spidey can stop it!
The Force Awakens’ worldwide opening weekend revenue totals account for 12.7% of the Disney-Lucasfilm acquisition. (It’s a more straightforward story of empowerment.) The good news: “Joy” is about a woman and will play to women, while “Star Wars” is more heavily male – by a ratio of 2:1, according to the site MovieTickets.com.
Oh right, there was other stuff too out this weekend, stuff like Alvin and the Chipmunks The Road Chip.
Twitter Inc added that The Force Awakens became the most tweeted-about movie of the year, garnering 4.9 million tweets over the weekend. But that’s still way down compared to the last one, $23.2 million (Alvin and the Chipmunks: Chipwrecked in 2011). (I mean, every fan base does, but this one does especially.) Recently, Tarantino got very upset on Howard Stern’s radio show when he said that he thought Disney was blackballing him out of the ArcLight’s Cinerama Dome.

“Alvin and the Chipmunks: The Road Chip” debuted in second place with $14.3 million, while the Tina Fey-Amy Poehler comedy “Sisters” opened in third place with $14 million. While this is not a family film but an R-rated comedy, I think it will end up playing similarly to Alvin, maybe a bit lower at $70 million overall domestically.
