A day to honor, not celebrate

First observed 150 years ago following the Civil War, this day has come to recognize all those great patriots who died in action in all armed conflicts.

Each plaque has a sponsor, and one of the plaques is dedicated to all service members and every branch of the military.

It’s Memorial Day across the United States. “So what we’re doing is honoring all of our fallen comrades”.

“I’m privileged to know so many local veterans who’ve felt a commitment to their country, and have gone on to serve their communities through volunteerism or careers in public service”, Olienyk said. The chaplain of the American Legion will then offer a prayer. A representative from the Legion Auxiliary will help with lining up the participants.

But it’s also communal, calling on us to look up from our lives and commemorate those who sacrificed theirs to fight tyranny and preserve liberty.

There will be a keynote speaker, patriotic music and the VFW State Honor Guard will present the colors and perform a rifle salute during the ceremony.

The holiday Memorial Day weekend is upon us and this is when we remember and thank those fallen heroes that died fighting for our country. In 1971, Memorial Day was declared a national holiday by an act of Congress, though it is still often called Decoration Day. In Morris, the ceremonies begin at 9 a.m.at the Armory, followed at about 9:45 a.m.at the Veterans’ Memorial at Seventh Street and College Avenue.

Mansfield: Mansfield American Legion Post 650 service at 1 p.m. May 29 at he north cemetery and 1:30 p.m.at the South Cemetery.
