In the spot for Edeka, a large supermarket chain in Germany, a grandfather is left home alone at Christmas because his family is too busy to visit.
The advertisement starts with an older man receiving a voicemail from his daughter telling him that, once again, the family won’t be coming home for Christmas.
The one minute and 46-second commercial begins with an elderly man sitting at his dining room table, reading a message from his daughter.
But not everyone has taken the commercial’s emotional wallop to heart, with many more viewers on social media describing the ad as tasteless and manipulative.
When the grieving family members then gather together at his home, guess who walks out?
If you haven’t cried at an advert this season, here’s one that’ll change that.
People tend to get a little weepy during the holidays, but a sad Christmas ad that’s been viewed millions of times is teaching some a powerful lesson.
