Universities, which find out applicants’ A-level results a few days in advance, inform Ucas of their decision ahead of results day. It is a common myth that clearing doesn’t open until 18 August, when A level results are published across the country.

If you check your Ucas Track and you have been accepted, that’s great.

What do I do on results day?

Once your results have sunk in, you need to login to Track, the UCAS online tracking system to see the progress of your application. “All in all, I feel pretty confident but you never know until you open that envelope and see the marks”.

Hopefully you’ll get the grades you need, but if you just miss out, the university or college of your choice might accept you anyway.

You might get a place on either your firm or insurance choice, depending how well your exams go.

You might be offered an alternative by the university/college – a “changed course offer” (which you’ll need to accept or decline).

Students who have not got the right qualifications, or have not yet applied for a place at university, can still join the clearing process, which is operated by UCAS.

If no decisions are showing, give your universities or colleges a call to find out more.

If you are definitely going through the clearing process, you first need to work out exactly which courses have vacancies, and if one of those is of interest. Sometimes, this may even be a different course at the same university or this may give you the chance to consider a vocational course or apprenticeship instead.

After exploring the other options, you may find that the Clearing system is your best step forward.

If you’ve got a place..

Once you’ve chosen a university, you will receive a confirmation letter to confirm the place.

For that reason, some schools, such as St Benedict Catholic Academy, Darley Abbey, is opening at 7am to welcome students.

Can I get my A-Level results early? There are other courses and options you can pursue if you don’t secure your first choice. But if things don’t quite turn out as planned, there will be thousands of courses with vacancies in Clearing, in a wide range of subjects.

“Talk to teachers, parents and friends about which courses might suit you best”.

Clearing courses are already on the UCAS website and they are being updated every day.

Do some research and you’ll be prepared for all eventualities when results day comes around. If you sign up you can still go through Clearing in the same way as previous years.

This’ll help you to keep calm and focused during Clearing interviews.

If this isn’t an option, you’ll get put through to clearing so you get another chance to find a suitable course and university.

“When you get to university you don’t get as many one-to-one tutor meetings timetabled in”. Write down your own questions so you don’t forget them.

Don’t just accept the first place you’re offered.

Ask yourself if the course is what you really want and if you’ll have the commitment to see it through to the end.
