A look at Hostess’ new “Deep Fried Twinkies”

There are 69 Walmarts in Minnesota to get the snack during the three month exclusivity period, but if you want the real deal and skip the cooking process, Spaghetti Eddie’s will have their own deep fried Twinkies with toppings at the Minnesota State Fair.

Walmart started selling the prepackaged, frozen Hostess products on Thursday at some of its stores, and it plans to roll them out nationwide by August 16, according to a Walmart spokesman.

The new frozen item will set you back $4.76 for a box of seven, and each will add 220 calories to daily intake.

And if you’ve dreamed of chocolate Twinkies, you’re in luck. Taking a cue from years of fair vendors plunging Twinkies into hot oil, Hostess is debuting frozen Deep Fried Twinkies at Walmart this summer.

Twinkies are perhaps the best known product from Hostess, which also makes Zingers and CupCakes.

The product marks the first time Hostess Brands has developed a product for the frozen foods section; a move that Schiffer said is a smart extension of the brand into another section of the grocery store. The cream filling was the same green hue as the ectoplasm-spewing ghost Slimer.

“We’ve seen the rise in popularity of deep fried Twinkies on dessert menus across the country as well”, Copaken told AP.

The company filed for bankruptcy in early 2012, shuttered plants later that year, and was bought and renamed in March of 2013. Gores Group plans to take Hostess public, expecting the IPO will value the company at $2.3 billion.
