A look inside Herkimer School District’s 2016 budget proposals

Despite last night’s vote, it does sit now, for 30 days and the school board comes back together for a final vote in June.

But the upcoming school year is the second in a row that state Teachers’ Retirement System pension contribution costs will drop. For the 2016-17 school year, teachers will receive step and column movement and remain at their current salary schedule. He also was a top candidate a year ago when the Philomath School District was searching for a replacement for its retiring superintendent. Seventy percent of District 15 teachers get raises for having a master’s degree or higher, and previously, the district budgeted roughly $200,000 a year for such increases. It can increase revenues, whether through another try at a parcel tax or by increasing donations to the school; it can reduce compensation for employees, through cutting staff and increasing class sizes or cutting salaries and benefits; or it can reduce the programs offered by the district. Special education needs could result in four new positions.

“We’re seeing other school districts hiring at $40,000”, Mischler said.

On average, residential structures have increased by 7 percent, while commercial buildings have gone up by 2.5 percent, according to the town’s tax assessor. “In the same token, it takes almost 100 percent of our local and or state funding to make it financially achievable”. “The bill is handed to us and the bill is handed to our employees”.

The plan reflects a tax levy increase of 1.9 percent, which would be an increase of about $27 on a home assessed at $100,000. Hauck noted that a request was made at last week’s work session to post the proposal on-line, but was denied. He said he doesn’t want to be in that position again.

Barksdale has said that, outside of the reinstatement of teachers’ wages, no contract has been ratified. He said, “We shared a lot of interests first before we sat down and started negotiating and I would like to thank the district team and the board for taking a very positive approach to this”. “With the contract behind us, we can now focus our attention on strengthening our education program and our budget”.

The school district is dropping Socs, its website provider, and will build its own website, and then adding Board Docs.

Resignations accepted by the board include Gail Snyder, assistant high school cheerleading coach; Kevin Brown, assistant junior high wrestling coach; and Tom Cyphers, bus driver. She advises Commissioner of Education Johnny Key and the State Board of Education.
